County Public Works director retires

The director of Public Works for El Paso County submitted his resignation letter before county commissioners Monday.

Ernie Carrizal has been with the county for 26 years. He was director for the last three and a half years.

“For 26 years we’ve been able to accomplish a lot of projects, but I’d like submit my retirement,” said Carrizal.

Commissioners accepted his resignation.

The county Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining parks, roads and infrastructure outside the city limits.

The department also oversees the maintenance of the county’s Sportspark. The complex still undergoing major renovations has seen its share of delays.

Last week, County Judge Veronica Escobar said the county is preparing to get into litigation with the companies that were in charge of the park’s construction.

In an interview Monday, Judge Escobar was asked if Carrizal’s sudden retirement had anything to do with the troubled sports park.

“Ernie’s retirement was a decision he made which we respect and honor, and we thank him for his many years of service. And we wish him the best,” Escobar responded.

ABC-7 called Carrizal to ask him about his sudden retirement.

Carrizal is the second county head to leave the county.

County Elections Administrator Javier Chacon submitted his resignation last week.
