Local hospitals feel the impact of President Trump’s Medicaid fund cuts

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- ABC-7 reached out to local hospitals in the area to find out the impact of President Trump's cuts to Medicaid fund outlines in the administration's One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

University Medical Center of El Paso:

"The estimated State Fiscal Year (SFY) 2027 Comprehensive Hospital Increase Reimbursement Program (CHIRP) gross reimbursement monthly impact for UMC, as provided by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), is approximately $3.7 million. Please note that the SFY 2027 figures are preliminary, as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has not yet approved the SFY 2027 CHIRP pre-print.  The final amount of CHIRP reimbursement can vary based on changes in patient volume and activity.  UMC continues to closely monitor the ongoing discussions between CMS and HHSC regarding the SFY 2027 CHIRP program. At this time, we do not anticipate any impact to patient care or services. UMC’s highest priority remains ensuring continued access to high-quality health care for our community."

El Paso Children's Hospital:

A spokesperson for the El Paso Children's Hospital (EPCH) said that the facility will be impacted by the cuts and is facing a gross monthly impact of $7.9 million dollars.

"EPCH Fiscal Department is always prepared for unexpected changes to supplemental government funding. Patients and services will not be affected. EPCH will be working with Children's Hospital Association of Texas and Texas Hospital Association to address the financial impacts of these Medicaid cuts."

Hospitals in Texas are preparing for the financial impact of the White House administration's nearly $10 billion cuts in medicaid funding.

Across the state estimated losses could add up to $27 million a day. The annual funds are part of the Comprehensive Hospital Increase Reimbursement Program or CHIRP. The program is the rate of funding that covers the difference between Medicaid payment rates and what the hospital costs for services.
