Man charged in weekend rollover that critically injured passenger

Alcohol and speed contributed to a weekend rollover that injured the driver and his passenger, police said.

David Zavala, 25, was driving east along the 4200 block of Fred Wilson in Northeast El Paso when he allegedly sped past a red light and lost control of his truck. He then hit a TxDOT sign, causing the truck to roll over about 10:45 p.m. at Dyer.

His passenger, 43-year-old Cynthia Mendoza, suffered life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized.

Zavala was also injured but not seriously.

He was charged with intoxicated assault and booked in to the El Paso County Jail with bond is set at $25,000.
