Las Cruces Public Schools, and former teacher, receive honors in fine arts

The Las Cruces Public Schools were recognized by the New Mexico Music Educators Association on Friday.

LCPS received the Award of Distinction, which acknowledged the support LCPS provides their schools in the fine arts department.

Diana Schutz, a former choir director at Las Cruces High School, also received an honor from the organization.

Schutz received the Teacher Emeritus Award, honoring her continued work with local musicians and students. It also recognized her contributions to the fine arts as a whole.

“Both Diane and John Schutz have been instrumental to our district when it comes to the fine arts,” said Superintendent Stan Rounds said in a release. “With their leadership and their support of the School Board’s vision, Las Cruces has long been known as a district that has enhanced its fine arts programs over many years, unlike other school systems that have made cuts to theirs.”

Schutz taught more than 30 years, and retired from LCPS in 2006. She received numerous awards during her time, and still volunteers for local fine arts organizations and mentors new teachers.
