Mail campaign questions possible Northeast water park
Mysterious flyers from an unspecified sender have been popping up in mailboxes across the Eastside. The apparent goal? To raise questions about a possible water park near Cohen Stadium in the Northeast of town.
The city’s deadline for proposals on a water park near Cohen Stadium was in September. But while the city’s still working on that, someone else is putting out these flyers across town calling the project a potential huge waste of money.
The flyer, mailed in bulk to many Eastside residents says that a plan for a water park near Cohen is already in the works and that it would be likely to fail and take tax dollars away from other promised projects.
So who could be sending these? The flyer only has a postal permit code, no return address or named sender.
One possible sender that has spoken out about the possibility of a water park denies all involvement.
Wet ‘n’ Wild Waterworld said in a statement, “Wet ‘n’ Wild was not involved in the creation of the flyer. However, it’s clear other taxpaying residents of El Paso are understandably concerned about the risky use of our tax dollars without any guarantee of success.”
So while no-one that spoke with ABC-7 is sure who is sending these, City Rep. Dr. Michiel Noe said that the flyer itself is a scare tactic, and that it’s wrong on almost all counts.
“Impossible,” Noe said. “This right here – number 1, there is no project right now going on. Number 2, if there was one, it certainly wouldn’t be paid for out of quality of life bond monies. No way.”
People who live and work in the northeast are torn. Many want to see something done with the stadium area.
“That’s what we need on this side too,” said one Northeast man. “Some type of other entertainment. Because to tell you the truth, everyone goes to Wet ‘n’ Wild, and it would be a lot simpler to just stay here.”
But not everyone’s convinced a water park is the best idea.
“Wet ‘n’ Wild has an excellent place,” said another woman in Northeast. “We’ve been there with our family many times, and it’s a beautiful already established water park.”
