El Paso Community College gathering donations for Moore tornado victims

The El Paso Community College Student Government Association needs help from the El Paso community.

Students at the college decided to gather donations for victims of the Moore, Oklahoma EF5 tornado that destroyed portions of the city on May 20.

Once the students came up with the idea to donate items, they needed a form of transportation. Someone suggested an 18-wheeler truck.

Through social media, the group found a local El Paso couple who was willing to loan their cab, and rent a trailer for EPCC.

The massive trailer is parked at the south end of the EPCC Valle Verde campus, near North Loop, in the parking lot.

Currently, they have gathered a small amount of donations, but need a lot more before the truck will be full.

They do not plan to drive the trailer to Moore until it is full, but have set a goal of June 7.

The group is looking for toiletries, clothes, food, pet food, toys, and other personal items that may be useful to the Oklahoma families that lost their homes.

They are also accepting monetary donations in the form of checks. The checks must be made out to EPCC. The college will then use the money to purchase items they are low on.

The same couple that donated the cab and trailer will be the ones the drive the load to Oklahoma.

They will have an Oklahoma contact point where they will hand out the donations.

There are several locations to drop off donations, including all EPCC campuses, public libraries in El Paso and the downtown County Jail.

Between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday the Valle Verde campus at 919 Hunter Dr. will accept donations at the trailer, and this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If no one is at the trailer when you come to drop off items, you can contact the EPCC SGA at 915-831-2096 or visit the Campus Life Office, Room C105.
