1 person killed in mobile home fire in Canutillo
One person was killed in a mobile home fire Wednesday night in Canutillo.
El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies were sent to 680 FM 259 in Canutillo at 9:19 p.m. in reference to a structure fire.
Deputies used a hazmat mask to enter the mobile home to try and find any residents inside the mobile home.
The deputies had to exit the home due to heavy black smoke and flames that were spreading quickly.
The West Valley Fire Department arrived at the scene and began to extinguish the fire.
After the fire was put out the firefighters entered the home and found a dead male inside.
The next door neighbor, Joe Sanchez, said he thinks this could have been prevented if his friend had a smoke detector.
“I happened to know he had no alarm in there whatsoever,” Sanchez said.
Sanchez said he knew the elderly man for ten years and is upset about this sudden loss.
“He was family,” Sanchez said. “It is a sad loss to me. Very much so. He was a very good person actually. Always there to help other people including myself.”
Sheriff’s office Crime Against Person detectives arrived on the scene and began the investigation.
Investigators are now going through what’s left of the man’s home trying to figure out what sparked the fire.
The investigation is ongoing and the sheriff’s office is not releasing the identity of the victim until positively identified.
