UTEP outrebounds Colorado State in 82-74 win

Julian Washburn scored seven of his 16 points in a flurry at the end of the first half as a balanced UTEP broke away from Colorado State 82-74 on Tuesday night.

The Miners out-rebounded the Rams, 53-36.

The win gives Miners coach Tim Floyd his first win in two seasons against his friend, Colorado State coach Larry Eustachy, leading 3-2 in five meetings. Eustachy was Floyd’s first hire in 1986 at Idaho.

UTEP jumped out by as many as nine points early but a pair of 3-pointers by Daniel Bejarano and two J.J. Avila free throws whittled the lead away and made for a see-saw game. Bejarano and Avila each scored game-high 19 points for the Rams.

Washburn nailed a jumper and drained a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer, his five points in the final 45 seconds pushing UTEP ahead for good.

McKenzie Moore scored 17 and C.J. Cooper 15 for UTEP.
