Man with Borderland ties sought in death of Colorado Springs toddler

A man with ties to the Borderland is on the run from the law.

He’s being sought by Colorado Springs police after his girlfriend’s toddler was killed last week and he may be in the El Paso area.

ABC-7 has received emails from viewers bringing the story out of Colorado Springs to its attention. They asked ABC-7 to air the story because the man Colorado Springs police have issued a warrant for — Kevin Diaz — grew up in El Paso and across the border in Chihuahua and still has family who live in the area.

Diaz, 23, is a Montwood High School graduate. He is facing charges of child abuse resulting in the death of a two-year-old.

Diaz is described as Hispanic, 5-foot-10, 135 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

Police were called to a home in Colorado Springs near the Air Force Academy last Saturday to investigate a report of an injured child. Maddilynn Hernandez died from her injuries the next morning and the coroner ruled that her death was a homicide.

Maddies’ mother’s cousin, Laura Fernandez, spoke with ABC-7 about the search for Diaz.

“Our family is completely torn apart,” Fernandez said. “It’s been a horrible tragedy. It’s a nightmare and we just want to have justice for Maddie.”

Investigators did not detail Maddie’s injuries. ABC-7 has learned that Diaz’s girlfriend, Maddie’s mother, is a Franklin High School graduate and also from the El Paso area. If you have any information on his whereabouts call 911 and contact El Paso police or Colorado Springs police at 719-444-7000.
