ONLY ON ABC-7: Mother of fatal I-10 rollover crash victim speaks
El Paso police identified 29-year-old Gilberto Juarez as the man killed in a rollover crash near I-10 East and Yarbrough Saturday night.
On Sunday, his mother sat down exclusively with ABC-7. Lourdes Barron had tears running down her face when she talked about the death of her only child.
“Wear your seat belt anywhere you go and don’t drink and drive like that. Because they leave, but we stay with the pain, and it’s a pain that I’m never gonna heal,” Barron said. “I don’t have nothing anymore. I’m empty, I feel empty.”
Most knew the victim as Gilbert, or his nickname, “Chino.” Juarez also left behind a 13-year-old son.
Special Traffic Investigators said Juarez somehow lost control of the 1998 Chevy Blazer he was driving. The vehicle hit a rock wall, causing Juarez to be ejected and the SUV to roll over. Juarez was crushed by the vehicle.
Barron said her son went to El Paso High School, and graduated from Vista College after studying refrigeration. She heard about the crash more than five hours after it happened.
“I hope that he’s with God right now. He’s watching me and I hope that he comes one day for me and we’ll be together again like the good times,” Barron said. She plans to bury him near Santa Teresa. That is where her brother, Juarez’s uncle, is buried.
