ONLY ON ABC-7: Woman finds dog with unregistered microchip

An ABC-7 viewer who found a dog wandering in east El Paso was ecstatic when a veterinarian told her it had a microchip. But, she still hasn’t been able to find its owner.

The woman who found the dog jokingly calls him “lost and found.” Whoever lost him did the right thing by micro-chipping their animal. When the chip was scanned, a veterinarian said no owner information was in the database. That has left Debra Kish caring for the dog for five months.

“This dog didn’t have a collar. Maybe he was even on a chain and pulled it out. He’s so rambunctious and happy. I mean, he’s a great dog and I’m sure that they’re feeling their loss and I feel bad that it’s been so much time,” Kish said.

Kish found the dog while searching for her own lost dog, “Angel,” near Wedgewood Drive and Singapore Avenue in east El Paso.

She has been searching for its owner since May, when she found the dog, but was disappointed to learn his microchip isn’t registered to anybody.

El Paso Animal Services Shelter Manager Dr. Marilyn Christensen said the issue more common than most people think.

“Frequently the microchip hasn’t been registered at all which means it’s really done us no good and the pet no good,” Christensen said.

Christensen said some vets will take care of chip registration paperwork for pet owners. Others require the owners take care of it themselves, via mail or internet with the chip company. Christensen stressed the most important thing, is making sure the information associated with the chip is up to date.

The microchip for “lost and found” is number 985 1210 1179 1825 . The chip was put in by Dr. Alvaro Medina with Mobile Pet Vet. The dog is a gray and white terrier mix.

The microchip number for Angel is 455C522F78. Kish is offering a $1,000 reward for her successful return. The dog went missing on May 13 in the Eastwood Middle School area, the 2800 block of Cabot Place.

Anyone with information about either dog may e-mail ABC-7 and we will put you in contact with Kish.
