New Mexico Athletics

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (KVIA) -- The New Mexico Lobos are officially ranked among the best teams in college football and they're making history along the way.

New Mexico landed at No. 22 in Sunday's Associated Press Top 25 poll marking the first time in program history the Lobos have earned a spot in the rankings since the poll began in 1936.

The historic recognition comes after New Mexico improved to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in Mountain West play with a 21-16 road win over San Jose State on Saturday. It was also the Lobos' first victory at San Jose State since 1969.

Under head coach Jason Eck, now in his second season, New Mexico has put together its best 7-1 start since 1982. The Lobos are also ranked No. 25 in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll, their first appearance in that poll since 1997.

The Lobos are one of the biggest stories in the Mountain West this season. At No. 22, they're also the highest-ranked Group of Six team behind No. 20 Boise State.
