Business owner helps former inmates find work

Shortly after ABC-7 aired a special report about the struggle convicts face in finding a job after serving time in jail or prison, numerous former inmates reached out, sharing their own difficulties getting back into the workforce.

One man told ABC-7 he’s trying his best to help others and himself through his business, Clean Guys Auto Shine.

“Washing cars is very basic,” said Jose Montoya, when asked what inspired him to start up the waterless car washing and detailing service. “We’ve all done it at one time in our lives.”

Another reason why he opened up shop last year is because he was trying to become a clean guy himself.

Montoya was convicted in 2011 for felony DWI and drug possession.

“I did about five months in the county jail. And once I was released, I found myself in a pickle,” Montoya said. “(It’s) really hard to find a job when you have a felony on record.”

While his business is privately owned, Montoya works closely with the Adult Drug Court Program under the West Texas Community Supervision and Corrections Department and hires many people exiting the program on referral.

Employee Annette Lopez was released from prison in New York in 2005 after serving a year behind bars for drug possession and distribution.

She told ABC-7 that shortly after her arrival in El Paso, she filled out dozens upon dozens of applications.

“I applied to McDonald’s, Taco Bell, those little restaurants, and nobody has ever called me back,” she said. “I believe it was because of that felony that I have.”

Lopez continued looking for work for almost a year until meeting Montoya through a mutual colleague.

She’s been cleaning cars since April and hopes to open her own business in the future.

“It’s like an inspiration when I come here because Jose opens my eyes to everything,” said Lopez. “He’s into recovery; I’m into recovery. It’s a great feeling coming here. I love my job,” she added, laughing.

It’s stories like Lopez’s that inspire Montoya, whose office walls are covered with religious and spiritual motivational quotes and images.

“We need somewhere to start,” he said. “And if no one gives that opportunity, the cycle will repeat itself.”
Montoya’s belief in building up trustworthy employees is how he hopes to build up his self-made opportunity.

“It is okay to give them a chance,” Montoya said.
