Abandoned puppies left in large commercial trash bin need new home

Animal abandonment is a serious issue that is often ignored or underplayed. That is why your donations are so important to the 22nd Annual Humane Society Save A Life Telethon held August 1st,2015

A good Samaritan taking out the trash got more than she bargained for. Fourteen puppies were abandoned and separated from their mother at just 3 weeks old.

Julie Gomez is a customer service associate with the Humane Society El Paso ” They put a new meaning to the phrase one mans trash is another mans treasure; I don’t understand how someone can throw away a puppy. Literally they were just found in a dumpster,” Gomez said.

Ryan Calhoun is a volunteer with the Humane Society. She said the puppies were terribly ill; they were so sick they didn’t have puppy breath, they were all about half dead from heat stroke. After we cooled them down we fed them and gave them lots of love,” Calhoun said.

Abandoned animals are common in El Paso. The Humane Society stresses the importance of spaying and neutering pets, they encourage pet owners to be responsible.

Animal breeders, should take the proper steps and get registered. Julia Gomez said it’s harder on the animals when pet owners are not responsible.”Come take a walk through the shelter every puppy that you’re producing is just one less home for these guys,” Gomez said.

At the end of the day employees and volunteers at the Humane Society have one common goal,to get as many animals out as possible and adopted in their forever homes.

Every year the Humane Society takes in hundreds of pets. August 1st, ABC-7’s news anchors, along with the shelters executive director, Betty Hoover and volunteers,
are teaming up for the Humane Society save a life telethon to remind viewers of the benefits a loving pet can bring a family.
