UTEP FOOTBALL: Miners Open Training Camp
camp in ruidoso. players are trying to win position battles all over the roster. one thing that isn’t being challenged is the team’s love for ruidoso… the quarterback position… tight end and corner back spots are all some of the positions up for grabs … we’ll have more on that tomorrow at 10… initially, adjusting to the altitude was a challenge for the players… lang: “i’ll tell you what. at first, jogging over here, i thought this could be a long day. once you get used to it and get it into your lungs, it’s just another day.” and everyone says ruidoso is a big leap up from alpine. kugler: “well as a fat coach, i like it a lot better. i’m not out there sweating.” roberson: outstanding! best case scenario, easily. it was everything i could ever dream for, for camp. stand up: when camp started, it was 68 degrees and sunny. a rewarding atomsphere following a strong season, but where the weather will be easy … camp will be as tough and physical as ever. kugler: we’re getting work because of the elevation up here. with the coolness, you get a more functional practice, but the lineman, i know they sure love it. harris: we’re competing at every position, myself included. no role on the depth chart is secure yet.” the team has its highest expectations in years and they are not shying away from the challenge.. they’re embracing it … leftwich: “last year wasn’t good enough. it was a great season for the program to bounce back and go to a bowl game but we have higher aspirations and hopefully we finish better than 7-5.” camp will bring out the best in each player on the roster as they look to make their mark on the team and the season… alex dickerson is one of the most consistent players
