Video emerges of El Paso Police officer-involved shooting

a different perspective of the shooting that happened last week on the four- thousand block of dyer. police tell us it was officer- involved shooting … family tells us the victim was 22-year- old charlie bertram. police say the officer pulled over the driver of a car … and when he approached the car, a passenger, who police have yet to identify, had a gun. shots were fired … and police say the passenger ran away but collapsed near gateway south. he died at u-m-c. today, abc-7 obtained surveillance video showing the moment before the shooting. abc-7’s darren hunt joins us live with new information. darren? estela, i got this video from the owner of player’s billiards on dyer street. it was captured on a survellience camera at the back of his bar, pointing out toward the parking lot. the entire incident lasts about three minutes. the video, which we have edited for time purposes, shows a police unit approach the vehicle as it parks. bertram is in the white t-shirt. at one point, he appears to reach inside the car. it is difficult to see what bertram got from inside the vehicle, if anything. that’s when the officer backs up and appears to pull his weapon. bertram backs up and then his body seems to jerk, as if he had been hit by something. he then runs away as he’s pursued by the officer and then collapses. this is how michael corren, the owner of players, described to us what he sees in the video. michael corren: “this is th point where he is reaching in the car because the officer is detained over here with another gentleman he’s reaching down below, you’ll see him reach down inside, he takes 20 steps back … that officer has probably seen him because he’s taking this guy and set him down now … he might be even using him as a shield, but he’s setting him down and he comes out with his weapon out, you can see him pointing and the gentleman gets shot.” we had many questions for police. we asked how many times the officer fired, how many times bertram was hit. a spokesman told me this is an on-going investigation and they could not release any more information. one week after the shooting, they haven’t even identified the officer involved. coming up at six, you’ll hear from bertram’s family, and see their reaction to the video we just showed you. darren, thank you. police did tell us there have been four officer- involved shootings this year.
