Weather’s impact from Las Cruces to Fabens and in between

out in the elements this evening from one end of the borderland to the other. reporter evan folan to the east in fabens… jerry najera covering west el paso and southern dona ana county. and jamie warren in las cruces. we also have our josie ortegon and bob harp working new details from our studio. and we have you. viewer videos and pictures are still coming in this evening. first… a live look at the highways tonight in east el paso as a lot of drivers make their way home. this is a shot from . and another shot tonight… this one from now to the west of the franklins. abc- seven’s jerry najera spent the day in west el paso and made his way up to anthony new mexico, right on the state line. jerry is live there tonight with what that area saw today. we just made our way back from new mexico. we were chasing those storms and we found them. take a look at this video. this is in anthony new mexico right off the 1-10 heading west. you can see the hail coming down slamming our windshield the hail was about pea size but enough for drivers to slow down even a few pulling over to keep safe. the visibility at the time was about 50 yards or a little less. there was some pretty wet roads out there but there wasn’t any major flooding. and just like yesterday in socorrotoday people driving right to those gas stations and seeking shelter. and also like yesterdays storms they swept through and in less than 10 minutes it was all done. now back out here live there are some storms in the horizon if they do come through we are definitely going to be passing along the when and we’re to help keep everyone safe. abc-seven’s complete coverage continued early this afternon with reporter evan folan in fabens. at about 3:30, take a look at what he got caught in: “i’m evan folan, live out her in fabens with abc-7, just being pelted with hail the size of marbles, we’ll keep you updated, we’ll see you on air at 4 to give you the latest. again, we’re under a first alert.” evan is still in fabens tonight and continues our complete coverage.. i’ve been out in fabens all afternoon and although things are calm now it was a different story around 3:30 a bad situation for farmers is now even worse. this is video from earlier this afternoon. the hail and rain coming down in sheets! and it did it continued to do so for over 15 minutes. about half a mile up the road there is fog and ice still on the ground. we caught up with a local farmer to give us an update on his crops after this down pour. sot: scott roosevelt ” …there is still a lot of hail east of here.. the trees are torn up… the cotton that was left is all on the ground now” although, a majority of his crops are damaged he says it’s all part of being a farmer and there is always next year. reporting live in fabens edf abc 7 heading north now up through dona ana county to las cruces. this video shows the aftermath of saturday’s storm. that’s the one that left so many las crucens with hail damage to their cars and homes. reporter jamie warren has dona ana county covered for us tonight. she is following the bit of relief already offered for the storm victims. jamie is live in las cruces tonight with our new mexico mobile newsroom. jamie? rick and maria, with all this weather damage we’ve been having to cars in las cruces…insurance companies across lc are warning you go to a reputable source when looking for repairs as we’ve shown you, this is just how dangerous some of that hail we experienced on saturday was farmers bureau financial services is offering a one stop shop for assisting customers who felt the brunt of that storm. pat cambell insurance tells me theyve processed over 200 claims since monday. officials are warning to be on the lookout for fly-by-night repair businesses swooping into town to make a quick buck. “there will be a lot people coming into town saying that they can do your work right away. be cautious because those folks may not be there in a month or two. some people are going to represent themselves to be licensed adjusters and contractors. make sure if they are an adjuster ask if they can issue a check…if they they cannot…go back to the insurance company and ask about that.” although there was severe weather over the weekend it looks like las cruces managed to not get hit just yet. we will continue giving you the latest updates on our first alert coverage on air and online if you are just joing us, the abc- seven first alert remains in effect. we could see even more rain tonight with potential flash flooding. with reporters out in the field…. to our stormtrack weather team…. keeping you up to speed. dave, both you and nichole gomez very busy tonight. flash flood watch is in effect today through early thursday morning. a large upper level low pressure system approaching the area will generate scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rainfall this evening through early thursday morning. rain chances are high for areas from el paso eastward tonight. as a result…excessive runoff from from heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding and extensive ponding of water in low lying and poorly drained areas. the heavy rain threat will shift further east by thursday. and nichole, we had two tornado warning this week… thankfully none today … but folks here in the borderland are talking about twisters! dave, being an el paso native there has been an on-going myth that we are protected by the mountains. and it just is not true. this video was taken by one of our weather watchers… near ruidoso. and it proves why we need to be prepared. diane blair caught video of a landspout tornado touching down on the sierra blanca peak, a few months ago.. during our summer,thunderstor ms develop. sometimes these storms can become severe. landspouts form when boundaries merge near a thunderstorm. what makes this different than the “typical” tornado, is how develops and what it is attached to. mountains don’t prevent tornadoes — they make it a little more difficult for them to form. on may 2, 2007 there was a tornado at white sands missile range headquarters. this photo was taken in lordsburg new mexico this afternoon. here’s the right ingredients the borderland can see tornados. national weather service meteorologist john fausett says landspouts can cause severe damage and it is important to have an evacuation plan for any type of severe weather. that’s right nichole and we’ll show you what the latest computer models show coming up in your stormtrack weather forecast. rick? we spent the day in various neighborhoods around town to find the answer. abc-7’s josie ortegon hit the streets she’s live with more … rick, maria. we checked out neighborhoods that have been hit pretty bad in the past and most recently in july, when we saw roads and homes flooded… in west el paso two neighborhoods suffered damage. floodwaters fractured the ashpalt on one road and in another area, a large portion of a rock wall broke. it was a different scene this time around. in east el paso, the recently- completed flood control project on montwood between mcrae and wedgewood is working accordingly. residents are calling all this a “pleasant surprise” “when they first decided to d the street project we were a little bit skeptical, it costa little bit more money, but it seems like it’s really working the last storms we’ve had, it’s drained it’s gone down the street.” “we usually have a lot of mud rain and rocks, the last of this storm it just took out the complete road, it held up pretty good the last couple of days.” if you see any damage, call 3-1-1 to report it. be sure to send any weather pictures or videos to us on facebook twitter and instagram. our first alert coverage continues
