Suspicious package found on NMSU campus deemed harmless

The Doa Ana County sheriff’s Bomb Team determined that a suspicious device found on the NMSU campus Thursday is not an explosive and is not related to recent explosions at two Las Cruces churches.

The device was discovered about 6 a.m. Thursday near a doorway to the New Mexico State University Performing Arts Center.

NMSU Police Chief Steven Lopez said the bomb squad cleared all nearby buildings for access, but the Performing Arts Center remained closed as authorities swept the building. Deputies also blocked the intersection of University and Espina for about four hours.

Classes were delayed for about 2 hours, NMSU officials said. Classes and services at the CFTA, Conroy Honors College, Chemistry Building, Music Building, Nason House and O’Loughlin House were affected.

While the sheriff’s office and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms continues to look into the matter, investigators said there was no indication that the device is linked to two separate explosions that happened in August at two Las Cruces-area churches.

According to Deputy Chief Andy Bowen, patrols have been increased for the day and the public is requested to report any suspicious items or activity they may observe.
