Six passengers involved in wreck, one woman airlifted to hospital

The Sunland Park Police Department confirmed six people were in involved in a single-vehicle wreck early Friday morning in Sunland Park, New Mexico.

ABC-7 initially reported it happened in Santa Teresa, but the police chief for Sunland later confirmed it is in fact Sunland Park city limits.

Officer Mark Tarantino told ABC-7 officers were called at about 4:15am to Pete Domenici Highway near McNutt Road.

The highway was closed off for about an hour, but has since reopened.

They arrived to find a green Jeep Wrangler that crash into a rock wall.

Five of the six passengers were taken to area hospitals, one woman was airlifted to University Medical Center with possibly two broken legs.

The front passenger walked away with no injuries.

Officer Tarantino confirmed open containers of alcohol were found inside the jeep.

He said speed was also likely a factor.

The jeep was traveling eastbound on a dirt frontage road parallel to Pete Domenici Highway.

Tarantino said the driver failed to negotiate a sharp turn and slammed into the rock wall.

The front end of the jeep was destroyed and debris, including a shoe was found in the desert area around the vehicle.

Police did not say what kind of charges will be filed.
