NMSU coach’s job safe despite lopsided homecoming loss, 17-game losing streak

The Aggies losing streak continues, after what many are calling a “humiliating loss” during their homecoming game Saturday.

New Mexico State University lost 52-7 against the Troy Trojans.

About 10,000 fans filled Aggie Memorial Stadium for the game. Some students told ABC-7 they left by half time because of the team’s performance.

Coach Doug Martin described Saturday’s game as a “complete embarrassment.”

The loss makes extends NMSU’s losing streak to 17 — the longest current losing streak in the nation.

While some students expressed their disappointment, others are standing by the Aggies.

“I don’t want to say its the coach’s fault but they need a whole new team,” one NMSU student said.

“We’re aggies at heart, so I mean it’s not like we would just switch to University of New Mexico because we have no ties to it. We have ties here so its important to support our local teams,” NMSU student Kenton Baker said.

Athletic Director Mario Moccia said that despite the team’s performance, he’s confident in Coach Doug Martin.

“While I was upset, not happy, embarrassed, I mean you got to take the emotion out of it and look at the situation critically and that’s what I’m trying to do,” Moccia said.

Moccia said Martin and his staff will be evaluated at the end of the season.

ABC-7 reached out to Martin Monday for comment, but he was not available.
