Jury sentences woman who killed husband to 25 years in prison

The jury that convicted Martha Acevedo of one count of murder in the death of her husband sentenced her to 25 years in prison.

Acevedo was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine.

Acevedo had no reaction when the verdict was read, but her family, including the two grandson she raised, began crying.

Acevedo strangled her husband, Jose, with an apron.

The sentencing phase started Wednesday afternoon. She faced five years to life in prison.

Her defense attorneys argued for a two-year-sentence.

A member of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office showed video of Acevedo when she was pulled over due to suspicion of DWI.

Earlier this week a sheriff’s detective testified about his interview with Acevedo, saying where she told detectives how her husband, Jose Acevedo, was drunk and punched her.

She says she fell unconscious and woke up on the couch.

That’s when she allegedly stood behind him with an apron, wrapped it around his neck and pulled hard for 10 seconds.

According to testimony, Jose didn’t struggle to get free because he was drunk.
