City Rep. Romero Suffers “Severe Medical Incident”

lot more vocal i’m new at being a politician or an elected official and i guess i could do things better.” just one month ago, el paso city rep. larry romero was responding to questions about recent controversy surrounding the financial adviser search: tonight his wife is updating abc-seven on a serious medical event he suffered over the holidays. good evening and thank you for joing us on abc- seven at six tonight. i’m estela cas. and i’m bob harp in for rick cabrera. only on abc-seven … city rep. larry romero suffered a serious medical incident and it’s unclear when he’ll return to city hall. abc-7’s maria garcia is live with new information you’ll see… … only on abc-7: remember the city council had asked romero to step down as alternate mayor pro tem and as chair of financial oversight and audit committee. when i had previously asked romero if he was going to step down from those posts, he told me he’d let me know after the holidays. so i stopped by his private business today to ask if he’d decided. i did see rep. romero but before i could approach him, his wife came to speak to me. she told me romero had suffered a severe medical incident and had been hospitalized three days before christmas. we understand he was just released from the hospital this week. rep. romero’s wife was upfront with us and we are not reporting his specific medical condition out of respect for romero’s medical privacy. romero had come under mounting pressure after reports surfaced revolving the city’s search for a new financial adviser – which started at the public suggestion of romero. but he has always maintained he did nothing wrong: larry romero: “you all have m as the most powerful person here at city hall. you all think that i can go to purchasing and i can say ‘hire this person.’ i can go to streets and say ‘do these streets.’ that’s not my job. the city manager runs the city. he’s the one who makes the decision. and yet you all keep coming on me like i’m the one who keeps doing everything.” this is happening as an investigator is reviewing the search for a new financial advisor. that investigation should be done by the end of this month. romero had before told us he welcomed the investigation to show he did nothing inappropriate. a private road where three people were killed this weekend is shedding light on a bigger issue
