Report: Browns to cut Johnny Manziel; Dallas interested?

A published report at NFL.com says the Cleveland Browns are giving up former Texas A&M Heisman trophy winning quarterback Johnny Manziel.

The report says the Browns won’t release Manziel until March 9, due to salary cap implications.

Manziel has been the center of a lengthy list of questionable conduct incidents during his two years in the NFL. An incident in which police were call last weekend may have been the final straw.

Manziel is being investigated for an alleged incident with a 23-year-old woman, the Fort Worth Police Department said in a statement on Saturday. An incident resulting in a call to the police occurred late last Friday evening at an apartment complex in Fort Worth.

Police reportedly responded to an assault call and made contact with the 23-year-old woman. A woman told police she had been involved in a disturbance with Manziel, whom she identified as her ex-boyfriend. She said that happened earlier in the evening in Dallas. The officers at the scene did not make an arrest, saying they were unable to find evidence of a crime within their jurisdiction in Fort Worth.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has expressed admiration for Manziel’s football talent, and reportedly had to be talked out of taking Manziel with the Cowboys’ first round selection in the 2014 NFL draft.

The team is known to be looking to upgrade at the backup quarterback position behind the often-injured Tony Romo. A collection of backups including Brandon Weeden, Matt Cassel and Kellen Moore managed to win just a single game for the Cowboys, who finished 4-12 this season.
