Motorcycle officer remains hospitalized

is still in the hospital after he was hit by a car yesterday. the officer was on his motorcyle unit when a car the officer was stopped at a red light when he was rear-ended at the intersection of lee trevino and vista del sol. abc-seven’s luke lyddon continues our complete coverage live at six… bob, ashlie, i spoke with police earlier today and they told me the name of the of the officer involved in the crash. he is 9-year veteran police officer, david ortiz. ortiz was assigned to the pebble hills regional command center everyone else involved in the crash only had minor injuries– while ortiz is currently in critical condition at the hospital. one witness on the scene did everything he could to keep the officer alive. “it is kind of nerve wrecking and its hard seeing something like that just happen in front of you, its pretty intense.” it was a scene witness jaime navarro couldnt believe happened just a few hundred feet away from him. “i was putting in gas and as i was turning i saw the gray car hit the cop and it ended up smashing into the red mitsubishi and the cop ended up flying hitting the truck.” police say ortiz wa waiting at a red light along with two other vehicles– when a car from behind crashed into the officer and then hit another vehicle. the driver of that car is only being described as a 45-year-old man. ortiz was thrown from his bike and the motorcycle burst into flames. “that’s when my instincts kicked in and i went over to check up on him and an off duty officer got there right away, so i asked him if he was okay but he was unresponsive, he barely had a pulse but wasn’t breathing so they started doing cpr on him.” “i to off my company shirt off so i could put it behind his head because it was bleeding pretty bad, it was the most i could do for him. just a day after the incident– family and friends already created a go fund me page for officer ortiz. more than one thousand dollars raised for a man who is still fighting for his life. to put this crash in perspective– back in 2015 there were 53 car related deaths– and at this time last year there were 9 deaths. but in 2016 there are already 15..nearly double. if you would like to donate to officer ortiz we have a link on our website kvia.com back to you. luke, and viewers have been sending their well wishes to the officer on the kvia.com facebook page. we invite everyone at home to read through some of them. luke thank you. abc-seven broke the news of a
