NMSU police dash-cam video shows chase, crash

abc-seven with the dash cam video from a new mexico state university police car wednesday night. you’re about to see a young man on a motorcycle try to ditch the officer who was attempting to pull him over. a short time later, mathew richter would be dead. this is a picture of mathew richter with his family. they are now making funeral arrangements the las cruces sun news reports richter was from washington and had only been in las cruces since december. his family says he was a firefighter in washington… and his sister posted this picture on social media. two days after richter’s death, we’re getting a clearer picture of what really happened wednesday night… right in front of the n-m-s-u campus. the university police officer who was trying to pull richter over says it all began when the 23-year-old ran a red light. abc-seven’s josie ortegon is… … live from our new mexico mobile newsroom . josie? rick, estela. the video isn’t easy to watch. the short chase that began after matthew lee richter allegedly ran a red light, ended just moments later. pkg: 2:56-2:56:35 “it’s clearly a tragic incident i’m sure the motorcyclist didn’t intend for that to be the outcome. the video shows the officer stopped at the intersection of espina and university. now watch where police say richter runs a red light. 1st stand up that’s when the officer turns his lights on, negotiates through traffic and follows richter who was stopped at he next intersection. the officer then pursues richter for about 2/10ths of a mile. that’s when he finds richter stopped at a red light at the intersection of solano and university. now watch as richter looks over his left shoulder appearing to notice the officer, that’s when you’ll see him pull over to the far right lane. stand- up 2 in the video you’ll see once the light turns green, richter slowly drives around the vehicle in front of him, then speed off. the officer cuts through traffic, driving over a median to try to catch up to richter. 3:00:36-3:00:41 “a motorcyclist like that is going to be able to accelerate much quicker than any passenger vehicle or police vehicle. stand up 3 it was around this area where nmsu police say richter was travelling at a high rate of speed when he crossed the median and into the westbound lane where he side swiped a car then crashed head on into a pickup truck. the officer would pull up to find the man and his suzuki street bike on the road. they may never know why richter fled from police: “we don’t know i we’ll ever know what his motivation may have been for not wanting to pull over for the police officer especially when it may have been a simple citation or a warning.” live in lc, jo, abc7. police are now waiting on the autopsy report and toxicology results. police say the officer appears to have followed all protocol–but they will review policies to see if anything needs revision. live in lc, jo, abc7. tonight, a las cruces woman is at u-m-c here in el paso with serious injuries.
