victim: “quiere ver la cortada? ashlie off cam: “tom, look at this shot, o my goodness.” tom off cam: “oh my goodness, i’m glad your okay.” tom off cam: “can i see a dona ana county woman’s neck — stapled together. she’s expected to be okay but is still struggling to come to grips with her terrifying ordeal. she says her husband tried to kill her. good evening and thank you for joing us. i’m estela cas. and i’m rick cabrera. police say the woman’s husband, carlos ordonez, called 9-1-1 saturday night .. telling the dispatcher he regretted what he had done — and to send police because he wasn’t sure what he was going to do next. we spoke with not only this woman who shares her horrific experience — but a las cruces dispatcher — who gives us a behind the scenes look at what happens when frantic calls of violence and abuse come in. abc-7’s ashlie rodriguez spent the afternoon with our new mexico mobile newsroom. she brings us a story you will see only on abc-7. ashlie? today i knocked on the door of the home where police say the slashing happened. a woman answered, but it was only after she revealed her neck injury that i realized who she was. violent events like this not only hurt the victims — they leave a lasting impression on the real first responders — the 9- 1-1 dispatchers. ordo?ez: i wanted to kill my wife. operator: who wanted to kill her? ordonez: me. do you want to see the cut operator: you? ordo?ez: yes. operator: with what? ordo?ez: with a knife. “it was horrible. i wouldn’ wish this on anyone. it was frightening. and the fear, no one can make that go away.” operator: ok. is she cut ordo?ez: yes. operator: where is she cut? ordonez: in the neck. i thought i was never going to see my kids again. police say carlos ordenez came to this las cruces home after drinking six beers. he got into a fight with his wife, who’s privacy abc-7 is protecting by not revealing her face. police say ordenez accused her of cheating on him — started beating on her, then choking her. he asked them to come for him because he was trying to kill me. as she ran from him, police say carlos pulls out a knife and slashes her neck. i was full of blood. 911 call police say they found carlos ordenez in this driveway, covered in blood, waving his arms with a cell phone in his hands after he had just admitted to dispatch he was trying to kill his wife. we try to get the caller to calm down enough to try to give us the who the what the where, try to give us whats going on. veteran 9-1-1 dispatcher lindy barreras has been getting calls like ordenez’s for the last 23 years. although she appeared unmoved by what this woman went through — she says talking people through these panicky, violent situations can take its toll. they’re not calling you when they’re having a good day. they’re calling you because there’s something going on and they need help. and for me its knowing that i can help somebody . 911 operator: “is your wife bleeding a lot?” ordonez: “n no, but i regret what i did and that’s why i called you.” you learn to file it away. once you walk out that door, you try to put it aside and not think about it anymore. 911 operater: “but, yo did cut her?” ordonez: “yes, but just a little. that’s why i’m calling so you can come for me before i do something else.” i think the hardest part of that is we don’t get the closure. we don’t get the closure, once ems and law enforcement gets on scene, we hang up and that’s it. but in this case — there is closure. “the ones who came save my life they were the ones that saved my life. if not i would have bled to death.” ordonez is charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and battery against a household member. he is held without bond at the dona ana detention center. the victim is a strong woman. she says carlos will no longer be a part of her life. not only are we thankful she shared her story with us — we’re thankful she’s alive tonight to tell it. thousand of people in west el paso and canutillo are without power tonight. el paso
