Arson suspected in 3-story building fire in west central El Paso

The El Paso Fire Department said arson is suspected after a three-story building went up in flames Thursday night.

This happened on the 100 block of Ruhlen near Paisano in west central El Paso.

EPFD said at around 11 p.m., passerbys called 911 to report the fire. Crews arrived at 11:04 and found smoke and fire coming from the first floor.

Firefighters began to simultaneously fight the condition 2 fire and search for residents. EPFD said there was no one inside, so crews continued to fight the fire.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control at 11:24 p.m. About 75% of the structure sustained smoke damage, estimated at $5,000.

Because the fire originated separately in all three floors, arson is suspected.

There were no injuries to firefighters. A total of 11 units and 28 personnel from the El Paso Fire Department responded to this incident. El Paso Police and El Paso Planning and Inspections assisted in the incident.

The El Paso Fire Department would like to remind the public about their FREE Smoke Alarm Program. In less than 30 seconds, a small flame can get completely out of control and begin filling a home with thick, black, poisonous smoke. In just a few minutes, a home can become completely engulfed with flames. With the advance notice of a working smoke alarm, residents can escape with their lives.

Residents who do not have a smoke alarm can request a FREE smoke alarm by calling 485-5699 or by visiting www.elpasotexas.gov/fire-department/services.
