quake struck saturday night 110 miles west of the country’s capital. spanish for a second.) “the biggest tragedy in the last 67 years,” says ecuador’s president. the death toll now above 260… and rising. but miracles… still possible. here, police reached a young girl beneath the piles of crumbled concrete. explaining that trapped woman is struck from waist down. this rescuer explains the woman they’re trying to save is stuck from the waist down. another rush to help 4-thousand miles across the pacific in japan– where twin earthquakes killed at least 40. collapsed roads and bridges… slowing the effort to reach victims desperate for food, water, medicine. man holding his toddler explaining worry about no medicine for her. this father is worried about not having cold medicine for his daughter whose been coughing. the u-s military is now assisting japanese forces… helping to airlift supplies. “we’re glad to be able to support in any way that the japanese government needs us to.” tag th earthquakes in japan also disrupted the country’s key auto manufacturing business. both toyota and honda have suspended operations at factories in the affected areas. happening today– oscar pistorius is due to appear before the high court in pretoria. this is file video of the courthouse. local media have reported that his sentencing hearing is expected to be held in june. the former athlete killed his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp, on valentine’s day in 2013. the former paralympian’s culpable homicide conviction was overturned by south africa’s supreme court in december 2015, when appeal judges instead found him guilty of murder. / back in the borderland and also happening today– the sentencing phase for a barrio azteca gang member is set to begin. luis rodriguez was found not guilty of capital murder on friday. he was accused of killing two men in 2012 over a power struggle within their own gang. however – a jury did find him guilty on two counts of participating in organized criminal activity. rodriguez faces anywhere from 25 years to life in prison. the sentencing phase will begin at 9 a-m and abc-7 will be there. the man who el paso police shot and killed over the weekend has been identified. the incident happened early sunday morning on the 7100 block of tierra taos is west el paso. the man who died was 22-year old eric john wilson. police say they were called out to the home around midnight because wilson was threatening to commit suicide. police tell abc-7, wilson reportedly told them he had two handguns and a rifle and threatened to shoot any officer that came near him. police say wilson reached for an object from behind his back and pointed it at them. officers shot him at least twice. the object in the man’s hands–turned out to be a cellphone. both officers are on administrative. / new this morning— the el paso county sheriff’s office conducted a round up all last week. the roundup targeted people wanted on a variety of warrants throughout el paso county. a total of one hundred and 15 individuals were arrested. 85 of those were for felony warrants and 65 were misdemeanors. 34 of the 115 did not receive bond for their charges. the total bond amount for all the subjects arrested was over 1.4 million dollars. the sheriff’s office says they have more roundups planned throughout the rest of the year. las cruces police are still looking for a person who they say is responsible for a hit and run. map w/ cg police say it happened around 5 saturday afternoon on solano drive near poplar. police tell abc-7 a man was struck by a car that was sparked by road rage. it’s unclear what led to it. the man hit, was airlifted to umc with non-life threatening injuries. time is running out to file your taxes– the deadline is at midnight. or you can request an extension to avoid a penalty. good morning el paso’s denise olivas is live with some tips … denise? the deadline normally falls on april 15-th, but a legal holiday in washington pushed it back. the i-r-s estimates it will receive 13-and-a-half million requests for extensions. even with three extra days for tax preparation– millions will not make tonight’s midnight deadline. you don’t need to panic. you do have options. filing a return is your best option– but if you owe money–pay as much as you can. you should still file on time to avoid penalties and interest charges, you can also apply for an installment plan. if you are not ready to file by today– you can get a six-month extension, but you will still have to give a payment. this week– the irs will be a hot topic for congress. the house plans to vote on six bills to hold the irs more accountable including cracking down on the estimated 16- hundred irs employees who have failed to pay their own taxes. right now on kvia.com– what are your rights as a taxpayer?
