Border Patrol agent killed in 18-wheeler crash identified

Border Patrol agent Jose Daniel Barraza died in a crash involving an 18-wheeler and his Ford F-150 truck. The crash took place on westbound lanes of I-10 at Mile Marker 78 near Esperanza.

According to a fundraising site, YOUCARING, Barraza was going home after working the midnight shift.

Customs and Border Protection Commissioner R. GilKerlikowske issued a statement Monday afternoon:

“I am deeply saddened by the death of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Jose D. Barraza. Agent Barraza, a canine handler, was involved in a vehicle accident with his canine, Vino… Our thoughts and prayers are with Agent Barraza’s family during this difficult time.”

Agent Barraza was assigned to the Sierra Blanca station of the Border Patrol’s Big Bend Sector.

According to a DPS spokeswoman, a preliminary investigation shows Barraza’s truck was traveling behind the 18-wheeler when for an unknown reason, the agent’s truck ran into the rear of the semi. Both vehicles came to rest on the shoulder of the westbound lanes.

A recent picture posted on The National Association of Former Border Patrol Officers Facebook page showed BP Agents mourning the loss of Barraza. The picture was taken after resuscitation efforts were stopped and agents took a knee out of respect.

The Border Patrol Council started theYOUCARINGaccount to help his family during this very tough loss.

According to the YOUCARING page,Barraza left behind a wife, Donna, and two young boys.

Barraza’s wife sent ABC-7 a statement Monday:

“I would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. He was an amazing father, husband, son, brother and friend. Those who knew him would tell you how much pride he had in being an agent. He will be loved and missed greatly. At this time, we ask for privacy.”

Agent Barraza will be laid to rest Friday.
