Ex-Deputy accused of killing partner had scratches on his body, bloody nose and upper lip

Prosecutors on Tuesday showed the jury photos of Tai Chan after he was taken into custody the night he allegedly shot and killed his fellow deputy.

Evidence Technician Shari Hill testified Chan had scratches on his body and a bloody nose and upper lip. Photos also showed markings on Chan’s hand.

After Hill took the photos, she said Chan told her, “thanks for treating me like a criminal.”

The jury also heard from an evidence custodian who described seeing a “red substance” smeared on the wall in the hotel stairwell.

Chan is accused of killing Jeremy Martin at the Hotel Encanto in October 2014. The pair was spending the night in Las Cruces on their way back to Santa Fe after dropping off a prisoner in Arizona.

Prosecutors say Chan shot Martin five times in the back. The defense argues Chan was acting in self defense.

Chan is charged with first degree murder. If convicted, he faces life in prison.
