overnight–we now know how long a man convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl will spend behind bars. county commissioners have been given an update to the used car problem out in tornillo–what residents are saying still needs to be done. plus–our stormtrack weather team has been tracking the storms overnight—we’ll let you know if those rain chances stay in the forecast. “more controversies for donal trump only adding to the growing divide in the republican party i’m abc’s maggie rulli and we’ll take a look comng upp’ taking you straight outside to a live shot of west el paso. you can barely see the sun peaking through all those clouds. those clouds brought showers to parts of the borderland overnight, making it a fresh and cool start to the morning. the monsoon moisture has brought rain back to the area this week–so will the rain be sticking around today?—we have those details coming up–but first a very good morning el paso, las cruces, and juarez. i’m stephanie valle. and i’m hillary floren. good morning, everyone. sentence carlos holcombe to life. holcombe was convicted this week of kidnapping a 12- year girl and raping her. we spoke to his defense attorney after the trial: ” we were expecting something a little bit different when we were waiting that long but obviously we must respect the jury’s verdict at this point. maybe the possibility of some appellate issues that we’ll explore at a later date, but again i mean, no winners.” for aggravated kidnapping — he was sentenced to life in prison and ordered to pay a 10-thousand dollar fine. he received the same for the 3 counts of aggravated sexual assault. and on the charge of indencency with a child — he received 20 years in prison and ordered to pay another 10-thousand dollar fine. an alleged pimp accused of forcing 2 underage girls into prostitution will not be getting out of jail soon. his bail has been denied. homeland security agents say 18 year old edeme missia-dan placed an ad promoting prostitution on “back page” dot com. undercover investigators called the phone number on the ad that was reportedly missia- dans cell phone. the agents met the two girls at this super 8 motel– where they allegedly offered a price for sex. missia-dan was arrested — and the two girls ages 17 and 15 were taken into custody. a child is recuperating in the hospital this morning after almost drowning. this happened yesterday on the 6- thousand block of sun valley. the fire department confirmed with abc-7 that a toddler was taken to sierra providence in serious condition. it’s been a couple of weeks since el paso county took action about hundreds of parked cars clogging the streets near the tornillo port of entry. so has it been working? good morning el paso’s andrew j. polk has been following this story. he’s live with the details. andrew? good morning hillary and stephanie. there is a stark difference between what the streets of tornillo looked like a few weeks ago and now. it went from roads lined with cars like this… to this, free and clear, after county commissioners approved new no parking signs on the streets near the port of entry. remember, this was all caused by changes on the mexican side of the bridge to how cars can be imported into mexico. the daily amount of cars let over there was cut dramatically, leading to these backups. so now, while the signs are seeming to have an impact on the back- up and manpower taken to enforce the law in the area… more are being asked for now. “the signs are working. peopl aren’t parking there. they’re not having near the problems they were having. we, based on last week’s action, are going to install 37 more signs at the request of the sheriff’s office. and that’ll be on their agenda on the 8th.” there’s not much more the county can do about the situation than banning parking. it can’t zone or enact ordinances in an area… and adding more no parking signs will take a public hearing on the issue, scheduled for next week. hillary and stephanie? the countdown to election day in november continues. but donald trump’s miscues, including his recent battle with the gold star muslim-american parents of a soldier who died in iraq, are costing him support among fellow republicans. abc’s maggie rulli has more — it’s your voice, your vote. donald trump battling with members his own party this morning, a bus nearly splits in half after crashing into a pole off a busy highway. we’ll take a closer look . and, parts of the country are being hit hard — rains washing out roads and stranding motorists. and this is abc-7, where news comes first!
