Back To School Coverage: Avoiding ‘senioritis’

It can be easy for high school seniors to get too comfortable in their final year.

Some call it ‘senioritis’ or the ‘senior slide,’ but it can affect a student’s productivity leading up to graduation and post-graduation.

At Riverside High School, the Go Center helps seniors stay productive through out the year.

It is a resource center for students to help prepare them for college.

Rebecca Meza, a Go Center specialist, said she helps students apply for scholarships, complete college applications and meet important deadlines.

Meza said seniors can also attend financial workshops held at the Go Center.

“Last year, our senior students, more than half received scholarships through their dedication and hard work,” Meza said.

All Ysleta Independent School District high school campuses have had similar centers since 2008.

“I avoid ‘senioritis’ by coming to the Go Center on a regular basis, making sure that I meet deadlines, Ms.Meza can always help me,” said Caitlyn Tapia, a Riverside senior.

Tapia plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin next fall.

Meza said if a student decides after graduation that they want to attend college, they can still use the resources and the Go Center.

“We’re here to serve our community,” Meza said.

Last year, more than half of the graduation class received scholarships.
