Illegal immigrants soon eligible for driver’s licenses
Immigrants in this country illegally will soon get state issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.
New Mexico state lawmakers passed a REAL ID bill earlier this year and the Taxation and Revenue Department announced Friday the motor vehicle division will begin issuing the ID cards on November 14th.
ABC-7 is still trying to get specifics from state leaders on what documents an immigrant will need to be eligible for an ID card.
But the TRD reports applicants must prove residency, identity, must be fingerprinted and undergo a background check if they want a driver’s license.
Back in March, Governor Susana Martinez signed a law that allows immigrants living in the U.S. illegally to to get driver’s authorization cards.
Those against issuing the IDs say it could mean more documentation requirements for legal citizens trying to get one.
