Students compete in Greater El Paso Football Showcase Combine

Since Dec. 2011, El Paso student-athletes have had a chance to take part in the El Paso Football Showcase Combine to hopefully earn a scholarship to play at the next level.

“I’ve been doing this for years, since I was a kid, nothing new,” One student athlete said. “You are just showing a different crowd of people what you have.”

This year, over 46 college coaches were expected to attend representing more than 35 colleges. These colleges attend with intent to offer scholarships immediately to the El Paso athletes.

A majority of the coaches in attendance, said they know not all of these students get the same opportunity others do in larger cities.

“It’s great to try and come find some of those kids that get overlooked,” One coach said. “For example, if they lived in the metropolis, they’d probably have more people looking at them.”

Since the existence of the combine, over 100 El Paso football players have attended college and received a total of over approximately $11.2 million worth of scholarships.

The student prospects will have one more chance to earn scholarships at the All-Star game Saturday, Dec. 17, at the Sun Bowl.
