UTEP falls to Maryland Eastern Shore in Sun Bowl Invitational

Fueled by Maryland Eastern Shore’s Bakari Copeland’s 27 points and 7 rebounds, the Hawks stunned the Miners in a close battle 71-66 in the first game of the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational.

The Hawks entered the contest with a 1-11 record on a 4 game skid, but it didn’t affect the squad as they only committed 6 turnovers and held on for a 5 point win.

The Hawks shot only 30 percent from beyond the arc, while the Miners suffered with a poor 18 percent on 17 attempts.

Miner Head Coach Tim Floyd said the team still has a long way to go to earn their next win.

“You know, we are not a really good team right now,” Floyd said. “Great teams win on the road,a nd good teams win at home. And right now we’re not doing either one of those. We have a long way to go, and we know that, and that is where we are right now.”

The path to the Miner’s third victory won’t get any easier as they will face UC Irvine Thursday, Dec. 22, at 5 p.m. at the Don Haskins Center in the consolation match.
