El Chapo Escapes! Beware of fake news headlines during Mexico’s April Fools Day
Mexican druglord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman escaped overnight.
The article published by El Diario early Wednesday morning caught some news outlets in the U.S. off guard.
Some even retweeted a link to the article or mentioned the newspaper’s headline unaware it was an April Fools hoax. The retweets by American news outlets were later deleted.
The ‘El Norte’ newspaper also published a fake news article claiming Juarez’s mayor had attended Rubi’s quinceanera, a celebration in Central Mexico which made headlines around the world after the family’s Facebook invitation went viral online.
