Mexico gas protests calming down on border

More than 200 Juarenses protested outside a gasoline distribution center in southern Cd, Juarez Saturday morning, angry about the government’s gas price hike in the new year.
A thousand were expected to turn out but only about 200 showed up, less than other gatherings, saying no good can come out of Mexico’s gasoline being unaffordable.

“Citizens can’t be thinking of what benefits deregulation may bring when their pockets are empty,” said Alma Loya, the appointed protest spokeswoman said.

Many called out against President Peña Nieto personally, some even mocking him by calling him an American puppet. Actors showed Uncle Sam drinking Mexico’s petroleum and controlling Peña Nieto.

“The government can’t be allowed to live like princes in a country of beggars,’ Loya said.

Organizers admit protests in Cd, Juarez will probably die down once gas prices along the border are lowered to match those in the US, however they’re saying they hope the people won’t stop fighting until fundamental issues are solved.

“Dishonesty is Mexico’s cancer and a cultural problem. Voters can’t demand their officials be honest if the voters aren’t honest themselves,” Loya explained.

The only thing they say will help the country as a whole heal? Not forgetting to turn up to the polls in 2018.

There is another price hike planned for February before the government completely lets go of their control over the industry.
