Traffic app will pay users to cross border
Metropia Inc. teamed up with the City of El Paso to search for technological pioneers interested in exchanging GPS data from an app for cash.
Tania Chozet, Metropia Inc. community manager, said the process “is very simple,” and an added bonus for people who cross the El Paso-Juarez border on their daily commute from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
“All they have to do is just launch the app and keep it running in the background,” said Chozet. “We will pay them up to $10 a day, $2.50 per crossing.”
The gathered GPS data is used to mark peak traffic times, and help users stagger travel times at all six ports of entry: Tornillo/Guadalupe, Santa Teresa, Bridge of the Americas, Paso Del Norte, Zaragoza and Stanton.
The City of El Paso reported 3.6 million passenger cars and 300,000 commercial vehicles crossed into Juarez at Paso del Norte, Zaragosa and Stanton ports of entry in 2011.
Chozet said the study is expected to last through the end of March, but is dependent on how much data is gathered.
Once the study is complete, users who tested the beta information will receive a check in the mail.
