Police identify young man killed after crashing into concrete pillar

Police identified the young man who died in an early-morning collision as 18-year-old Charlie Hurtado.

Special Traffic Investigators said Hurtado was driving a 2016 Toyota Tundra pickup south at the 1300 block of Joe Battle just before 5:00 a.m.

Hurtado attempted to make a left turn, using the turnaround lane, but failed to negotiate the turn and collided with a cement pillar, police said.

Investigators said Hurtado was speeding prior to the collision. The young man sustained life threatening injuries and was transported to Del Sol Medical Center, where he died.

This is the 12th traffic related fatality of 2017 compared to 14 during this same time period in 2016.
