Srinivas Kuchibhotla remembered

On Saturday, people gathered to honor Srinivas Kuchibhotla, the UTEP graduate that was shot and killed in Olathe, Kansas in February.

Kuchibotla, a native of India, earned his engineering degree from the University of Texas at El Paso.

Those who gathered say they joined hands to show compassion, empathy, solidarity and for -human values.

“While no words or actions can bring solace to his family, we are here to remember him and honor him,” said one UTEP professor.

Word of Kuchibhotla’s violent death left some friends in disbelief.

“For a few minutes, I couldn’t say anything,” said Suman Sirimulla.

Sirimulla and Kuchibhotla attended UTEP together. Both were seeking a better life and the American dream.

“He was loved by many people and all of his friends,” Sirimulla said.

Kuchibhotla earned a master’s degree in engineering. He moved to Kansas with his wife, and became an aviation engineer.

Some held signs that read “peace is beautiful.” India natives living in El Paso, like Chattar Singh, say violence and racism do not have a place in society.

“He did not deserve to be killed. This cannot happen in America,” Singh said.

Those who attended wrote words of support that will be sent to Kuchibhotla’s family.

The notes said: “I am sorry for your loss,” You are in my thoughts and prayers,” and “May god give strength to your family.”

Singh says the vigil served as a way to remember Kuchibhotla, but also as a reminder that a community of all races must bond for a better future.

“Today we are here, tomorrow we could not be here. Let’s get connected, let’s stay together,” Singh said.

Police say 51-year-old Adam Purinton, the man who allegedly shot and killed Kuchibotla, faces murder charges.

Funeral services for Kuchibhotla have already taken place in India. He would of turned 33 on Thursday.
