Keitha Adams reportedly interviewed for Wichita State job

A local newspaper in Kansas, The Wichita Eagle, is reporting that UTEP women’s basketball head coach interviewed for the vacant head coaching position at Wichita State.

Adams is a native of Kansas, but has been with UTEP a long time – since 2001. However, last year’s UTEP squad finished a mere 8-23.

Wichita State’s last head coach, Jody Adams-Birch, left the position in January of this year.

Wichita State has reportedly interviewed at least one other candidate in addition to Adams, although more names are likely to emerge soon, according to the Eagle.

Keitha Adams is 284-209 in 16 seasons at UTEP and has rattled off six campaigns of at least 20 wins during that span.

She was also named the C-USA Coach of the Year in 2008, 2012, and 2016.

Prior to her arrival at UTEP, the women’s basketball team hadn’t won more than 18 games in a single season and had only posted a winning record fives times in 25 seasons.

Bob Stull, UTEP’s athletic director, issued the following statement on Keitha Adams interviewing with Wichita State:

“Wichita State athletic department officials have reached out to coach Adams, expressing interest in her as a candidate for their head coaching vacancy. Coach Adams has been extremely successful at UTEP and, as a result, has been contacted by multiple schools in recent years. We are fortunate that she has elected to stay at UTEP to this point, and we hope to keep her here.”
