After Times Square attack, calls for more sidewalk barriers

NEW YORK (AP) – A three-foot-tall piece of stainless steel in the ground ultimately stopped a speeding Honda Accord as it barreled down the crowded sidewalks of Times Square this week.

Following the rampage, some New Yorkers are calling for the installation of more protective bollards at the ends of city sidewalks to prevent similar incidents.

One person died and 22 were hurt Thursday when a Bronx man drove his car down the sidewalk for three blocks.

One city councilman says he’ll be drafting legislation to get more sidewalk fortifications installed that can stop vehicle attacks.

The mayor says police are reviewing whether more security measures are needed.

Experts say the bollards in Times Square likely saved lives. In the past year 200 custom-made bollards have been installed in the area, especially around the heavily-trafficked pedestrian plaza.
