Low voter turnout in early voting for El Paso County District 8 representative

Early voting for the District 8 City Council seat and the special mayoral election for Socorro has not attracted many voters so far. According to the County website, 473 voters turned up for early voting between Wednesday and Friday. There are just over 39,000 registered voters living in District 8. That means less than one percent of registered voters participated in early voting so far. The website also noted that only 92 people voted for the Mayor of Socorro, out of 16,688 registered voters in the city. Early voting for the spots end on July 11. There will be no open polling locations on July 4 for Independence Day. Polling will resume on July 5. Election day is July 15. You can find early voting locations here. The District 8 race is between Robert Cormell and Cecilia “Cissy” Lizarraga. The two are gunning to finish the term of Cortney Niland, who stepped down in April for personal reasons. Ivy Avalos, Elia Garcia, Joe Ramirez and Alejandro Garcia are running to complete Gloria Rodriguez’s unexpired mayoral term.
