Community Champion: Tony Harper to be inducted into hall of fame

Cathedral boys basketball coach Tony Harper will be inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame in May of next year, according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

For that, he is this week’s Community Champion, sponsored by Southwest University.

Harper, who has won 1,000 career games, is the current leader in total wins among active boys basketball coaches in Texas.

His Cathedral team knocked off iTEC Prep Academy on Feb. 10 to secure his 1,000th career win.

Harper’s induction in 2018 will coincide with the 50th anniversary of his first high school basketball coaching job. The ceremony is expected to take place in San Antonio on May 19.

Harper began his career at Burges and later went on to coach El Paso High and Montwood before taking over as the head coach of Cathedral.

He has previously stated that he plans to return to Cathedral for the 2017-18 season.
