EPPD: Speeding and drunk driving a factor in deadly, fiery wreck

Police say speed and alcohol were contributing factors in a fiery collision that left one man dead in El Paso’s Upper Valley Tuesday morning.

Authorities say that the EPPD Westside Patrol responded to a single vehicle fatal collision in the 5500 bock of Montoya just after 1:00 a.m.

A police investigation revealed the male driver was traveling south on Montoya at a high rate of speed when the vehicle left the roadway.

Officials say the driver’s BMW sped off the road and collided with a large tree, causing the vehicle to erupt in flames upon contact.

The driver suffered serious injuries and died at the scene, police said.

A male passenger also suffered serious injuries and was transported to University Medical Center.

The intersection was closed for several hours but has since opened.

EPPD has not released the names of those involved in the collision.
