SWAT standoff in Las Cruces, wanted suspect barricaded in hotel

The Las Cruces Police Department activated its SWAT team Friday after a wanted man barricaded himself in a hotel room, a police spokesman said.

The standoff began at about 1 p.m. when the suspect, wanted on an active felony warrant for his arrest, barricaded himself inside a room at the Hampton Inn.

The hotel is located at 755 Avenida de Mesilla.

Police said the suspect has refused to exit the room or obey commands.

As a result, police evacuated some of the hotel’s patrons. Officials said surrounding businesses need to follow directions from officers in the area.

A portion of Hickory Loop near the hotel has also been temporary closed to traffic.

Motorists and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area is possible and follow directions from officers on the outer perimeter.
