Arizona piles on the points in 63-16 rout of UTEP
UTEP managed to hold Arizona scoreless through the first quarter, but it didn’t take long after that for the Wildcats to assert their dominance en route to a 63-16 win.
Arizona scored on the first play of the second quarter on a two-yard pass from Brandon Dawkins to J.J. Taylor to take a 7-0 lead. They would never look back.
The second quarter then became a showcase for Arizona’s Shun Brown.
Brown hauled in a 36-yard touchdown reception later in the quarter to put his team up 14-0. Then, he tallied a remarkable 63-yard punt return that saw him spin away from two defenders and glide into the end zone.
Arizona would score 35 points in the second quarter alone to take a 35-9 lead into the locker room.
UTEP managed to reach paydirt twice on the evening. Zack Greenlee connected with Tyler Batson for a nine-yard score in the second, while UTEP’s other quarterback, Mark Torrez, tallied a six-yard rushing touchdown in the third.
The Wildcats posted more than 500 yards of total offense including 326 yards on the ground.
Arizona moved to 2-1 on the year with the victory, while the Miners dropped to 0-3.
UTEP will next face New Mexico State at Aggie Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m.
