El Paso celebrates Mexican Independence Day

The City of El Paso is hosting a Mexican Independence day celebration at San Jacinto Plaza Saturday from 5 pm to midnight.

It was 207 years ago that a rebellion against the Spanish crown began in the small mexican town of Dolores Hidalgo; Juarez celebrated last night and El Paso is celebrating today.

The event’s stage is hosting folkloric dancers throughout the evening, but mariachis and Mexican bands will also take the spotlight to entertain visitors with classic Mexican music. Stands along Oregon offer tricolored gifts and even Mexican flags for people to celebrate the holiday with.

Food trucks serving Mexican food, combined with borderland classics like bacon-wrapped hot dogs, are also serving the crowds as they gather.

The Grito, the most iconic of Independence Day traditions, is scheduled to be at 10:15 pm with Mayor Dee Margo and the Mexican Consul in El Paso. Back in 1810 the rebellion against the Spanish crown was started by a priest waking up his town and crying out for independence.
