FBI warns of virtual kidnapping
The FBI said they’ve investigated four reports of virtual kidnappings within the last two years.
They said a virtual kidnapping is when a person calls you claiming to have kidnapped a loved one or family member. The kidnapper asks for a ransom and will threaten to hurt the victim’s loved one if they don’t receive it.
Assistant Special Agent in charge for the FBI, Keith Byers, said, “One of the important points that I wanted to make to people in the west Texas area, in the past year in the El Paso area and the west Texas area, we have had no legitimate kidnappings involving a ransom, they very rarely occur, so that’s an important point for people to understand.”
If you recieve a call, the FBI advises that you don’t hang up until you contact law enforcement, don’t transfer money and do not provide any information.
