SISD students compete at annual robotics competition

Dozens of students from all across Socorro ISD came together to put their coding skills to the test on Saturday.

The students spent months preparing for the robotics competition held at Pebble Hills High School. They learned how to build and program robots made out of Legos to solve puzzles.

“We’re living in a world with technology right now — it’s something essential in our lives,” Desert Wind middle schooler Kevin Cadena said. “T he thing that I like about coding is that it’s fun and it’s also easy.”

The competition also incorporated a research component. This year, students were required to solve different problems surrounding water pollution and conservation.

“It was overwhelming to start with a brand new set of challenges, and to have the new problem of water,” Vista Del Sol Elementary coach Brenda Torres said. “Now you see the confidence, you see them starting to pick the harder challenges which is exciting to see. they’re not sticking to just the easy programing skills.”

Ten robotics teams will advance and compete January 27 at the regional competition hosted by UTEP.
